ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the problems from the viewpoint of organizational culture. It focuses on the symbolic aspects of a Computerized Information System (CIS). A computerized information system should be understood not only as the hardware and software of a particular computer, but also as the connections between computers. Talking about a CIS and seeking to understand CIS symbolics calls for discussions of the new CIS, which do not only focus on technical data, but also on psychological aspects. Organizational culture establishes itself from individually and collectively performed behaviour as a pattern of basic assumptions that has worked well enough to be considered valid and to be taught new members as the correct way to perceive, think, and feel. Organizational culture must be understood as the implicit consciousness of an organization, which develops out of its members' behaviour, and which influences their behaviour.
