ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the kind of visual artifacts, namely the human gestures. The communicative content of the artifacts may be instrumental and relate to work activities. Moreover, the communicative content of the artifacts may be expressive and relate to feelings and emotional needs of individuals in the organization "perhaps by removing uncertainty or providing an object to identify with". The artifacts of tradition may be seen as physical manifestations of organizational eternity, just as the white and naked corridors signal timelessness. In the photo reportage, the sacred artifacts to be found all over the organization are papers, files, lawbooks, and other kinds of stored information and knowledge. The hard-working, naked, puritan, and grey atmosphere penetrates daily life in bureaucratic organization. In a bureaucracy, meetings are held almost as punctual, repetitive, and continuous as if they were prayers in a monastery.
