ABSTRACT

The charge brought against his age (some 30 years ago) by Alfred North Whitehead was that the age was living on the intellectual capital accumulated in the seventeenth century. The implication was that if no new sources of “intellectual income” are discovered, the resources will be squandered. Elsewhere Whitehead said that the culture that cannot burst through the framework of its own concepts is doomed.
