In 1896 John Dewey criticized the new reflex arc concept in psychology on a number of grounds and concluded that:. . the distinction of sensation and movement as stimulus and response respectively is not a distinction which can be regarded as descriptive of anything which holds of psychical events or existences as such.” 1
