ABSTRACT

Dismissal of researchers in at least two psychology departments in the early 1930’s because of studies on human sexual behavior could not help but increase the anxiety of psychologists contemplating work in this field. Despite Freud and his followers, Havelock Ellis, German sexologists, and others, only five psychologists had published anything approaching good statistical data on human sexual behavior prior to 1940. Interviewing in the taboo area of sex behavior has been an intriguing and kaleidoscopic experience. One excellent study was completed and then locked away and has to this day never been released. In most research programs, there has been a sound body of scientific knowledge that has served as a background and foundation for further research. However, with the climate changing in the direction of a more relaxed attitude toward investigation and discussion of sexual behavior, it can reasonably be anticipated to increase in the quantity and quality of research on sex.
