ABSTRACT

The array of neoconservative, hawkish, and pro-intervention think tanks that propagandize for United States (US) military involvement abroad is heavily subsidized by the very government whose reach they seek to extend. The list of foreign political parties and movements that have been subsidized by the US taxpayer through the National Endowment for Democracy is staggeringly long: from the Civic Forum in Czechoslovakia to feminist groups in the Congo to the Mongolian Social Democrat Party. The possibility of getting government out of sexual relations altogether and leaving "abstinence" and "contraception" to the good judgment of parents, churches, and families seems not to have crossed the TVC's collective mind. The National Center's exact purpose is—like many community-activist groups—a bit murky. According to its publicity material, the Center "provides effective community and faith-based organizations with training and technical assistance, links them to sources of support, and evaluates their experience for public policy.
