ABSTRACT

Jeffrey Skoll made his fortune as an entrepreneurially-oriented business executive. Skoll, a tough-minded optimist, believes in the possibility of change and progress. Skoll looks at his post-eBay endeavors in an integrated way: argument and entertainment and entrepreneurship; nonprofit and for-profit and breakeven. Skoll's primary objective in his philanthropy is not to make money, nor does he even truly care if the organizations to which his foundation donates break even, as his eBay business partner, Pierre Omidyar, does. The Skoll Foundation has empowered a variety of social entrepreneurs "to extend their reach, deepen their impact and fundamentally improve society". One of Skoll's philanthropic endeavors became making films with a social mission. Skoll's involvement in the motion pictures went back to 2001. With his motion picture company, Skoll hoped to inform and educate people about some of the world's bigger issues, to inspire hope and then action.
