ABSTRACT

The real villain was the snake, the most subtle creature of the field, and the prototype of the advertising man. The snake beguiled the first women, and advertising men have been beguiling women ever since. This chapter examines the relationship between women and sex and advertising, keeping in mind the mythico-historical relationship found in the Bible. Women had been convinced that raising children earned them the love of God; in addition, as is often the case when we deal with the sacred, there seemed no other possibilities. Every survey has shown that the image of an attractive woman is the most effective advertising gimmick. The process is speeded up because wives are real human beings, who get tired and grow older, who aren't always perfectly dressed and are not perfect illusions. The answer probably has something to do with the fact that the navel is symbolic of our fallen state, of the fact that we are all born of woman.
