ABSTRACT

Topless dancing, as it is called in San Francisco, started at the Condor, with Carol Doda, on June 16, 1965. A woman's breasts in America are symbols of sexiness— the voluptuary with great cleavage— and are also symbols of "mother." The standard joke in topless places involves a customer asking a topless waitress for some cream in his coffee. All, her name, Carol, means to praise, she is "star" who descends to the stage as if she were some kind of heavenly spirit, and the lighting turns her into some kind of vision. Tara has a much different style from Carol Doda's, and she is somewhat of joker. They both have a glassy look in their eyes when they dance, as if the exhibiting of their breasts and the beat of the music were giving them some kind of sexual thrill, but whereas Carol's performance is highly stylized, ritualized almost, Tara seems to be making fun of the whole thing.
