ABSTRACT

The commercial starts with the number 1984 appearing on the screen. The title of the commercial brings to mind George Orwell's novel, 1984 and the text of the commercial is based on the idea of the dystopia. This chapter examines some of the most important images from the text, discusses how they generate meaning, what that meaning is, and how viewers might be affected by these images, and speculates about the narrative itself. It explores the longshots the Total Institution, the Boots, the Blonde, the Brainwashing, Big Brother, the Message, the Explosion, the Response and the Announcement. The blonde heroine of this microdrama calls to mind several different heroic figures from our collective consciousness. One function of the mythic hero or heroine is to mediate between opposing forces in an attempt to resolve some basic opposition.
