ABSTRACT

Direct-satellite television broadcasting has been alleged to represent an active threat to the integrity of national cultures. Whatever one's value position, the fact is that in the modern world, there is international cultural intrusion. Foreign influence is but a special case of the disruptive impact of intellectual and cultural media in general. The main determinant of attention to foreign media is the responsiveness of domestic media to the desires and interests of the public. Dance manifests similar tendencies toward cultural assimilation. The dance is generally a stylized, controlled indulgence in taboo behavior, whether in male-female relations or in expression of other passions. Into this world there enters television, which fascinates and hypnotizes both the literate and the illiterate masses; television, subject to the influence of universities or the State; television, feeds on the dregs of mass culture—violence, pornography, triviality and mediocrity.
