ABSTRACT

On November 24, the several subcommittees' reports were presented to the General Assembly. The General Assembly special session opened on April 28 at Lake Success, twelve days after Gruner and the others were hanged, and six days before the great jail break. At Lake Success Zionists pleaded, as a very small remnant of an ancient people, for a homeland in Palestine, mixing moral consideration, interpretations of international law, biblical arguments, and whenever possible, behind-the-scenes politicking. The Irgun's press and radio, "The Voice of Fighting Zion," continued to warn against partition and the British plot, but for the high command Lake Success was very far off. The chaotic old city had long since crept inside the inner walls of the citadel, which had long been used as a prison by the British. Some prisoners rushed toward their cells to escape the fire.
