ABSTRACT

To understand the world of the leading intellectuals of the late 196o's, then, one must first understand something about leading intellectual journals of that time. To begin with, we should like to know which were the leading journals and what made them influential. Then we should like to review the relationships between journals and intellectuals, including who makes whom. Our elaborate ratings of the influence of journals and individual intellectuals is, at one level, mere organized gossip, interesting as that may be. But how ideas are selected and transmitted, who determines which ideas are to be influential as well as who may pronounce them-these are important to political and cultural life.
