ABSTRACT

Corporations, being collections of people, are subject to all the failings and foibles of human beings. There is a tendency for arrogance and callousness, to function by bureaucratic habit, taking the path of least resistance, getting ensnarled in procedures, imperviousness to feedback, and generally losing sight of what the real mission is or should be. It is true that corporations must earn profits to stay in business, make all the products, and provide livelihoods for all whom they employ. Many do believe corporations make piles of money. Populist politicians also like to pile taxes on impersonal corporations rather than working stiffs. Fine sentiment. But higher taxes make corporations less competitive and discourage investment; in fact, corporations don't have to sit still like sheep for shearing and can move elsewhere. Nevertheless, some still suppose that corporations today are more powerful than governments and that it is really big corporations that rule the world.
