ABSTRACT

The foundations for a new internationalism can only be found in the old internationalism. Globalism provides the conceptual foundations for a new kind-of internationalism that transcends all other internationalisms. As the conceptual foundation for a new kind of internationalism, liberalism envisages world markets that are much more emancipated than they are at the moment. In politico-strategic terms, the assumption that human nature is essentially bad predisposes what is called liberal internationalism, which describes and explains world affairs in terms of the international system of states. The internationalism that collectivists envisage is one where global social movements serve mostly the good of humankind, by making it possible for people to come together to promote shared values, regardless of the state they live in. The internationalism that individualists anticipate is one that ensures global respect for human rights and human responsibilities, and the global realization of democracy.
