ABSTRACT

The technical movement and the revitalization movement may be at cross-purposes. Since the motivating energy for the technical movement must, insofar as the local population is concerned, be supplied by the revitalization movement, it is necessary to examine the phenomenon of popular movements of social reform, or revitalization movements, in more detail. Development programs with "strings'' which are considered to impugn the self-respect and human dignity of the "new men" which the revitalization movement is producing are certain to be resisted openly or quietly subverted. Revitalization movements are deliberate, organized, conscious attempts by some or all of the members of a society to construct for themselves a more satisfying culture. The typical revitalization process may be considered to consist of five or more or less overlapping stages: steady state, period of increased individual stress, period of cultural distortion, period of revitalization and new steady state.
