ABSTRACT
It was suggested in the preceding chapters to define the concept of intensification in agriculture in a new way, namely as the gradual change towards patterns of land use which make it possible to crop a given area of land more frequently than before. To re-define intensification in this way is almost tantamount to pointing out that the scope for additional food production in response to population growth is larger than usually assumed.
