ABSTRACT

Hirschi and Gottfredson note that the question most frequently asked of criminologists may well be: “Yes, but what about white-collar crime?” The title of this article thus reflects their intention to show that white-collar crime is not unique with respect to its causes or consequences, that it easily falls within the purview of self-control theory. It is ironic that Sutherland made the same argument over sixty years ago. The critics remain unconvinced (see, for example, Gary Reed and Peter Yeager, “Organizational Offending and Neoclassical Criminology: Challenging the Reach of a General Theory of Crime,” Criminology 34, 1996:357-382), but in Hirschi's view the evidence in favor of their perspective continues to mount.—JHL/TH
