ABSTRACT

A healthy body will always recognize when it is in danger. It has built into it a system of detection that, once activated, sounds an alarm of danger so that defensive forces can be marshaled against the offending stimulus. Hate is constructive when it is used in self-defense, and is a vital reaction to have available. It becomes pathological only when it is fused with unfulfilled infantile needs, and destructive only when it is translated into action. The Greeks emphasized the importance of the limb-relaxing qualities of love, sleep, and death because they believed in the soul. A healthy body will always recognize when it is in danger. It has built into it a system of detection that, once activated, sounds an alarm of danger so that defensive forces can be marshaled against the offending stimulus. The process of growing up is, then, about developing the capacity to defend oneself, on the level of both body and mind.
