ABSTRACT

Ethnic change and multiculturalism in Californias higher education system was being more directly pushed by the dramatic demographic changes in that state. In analyzing the intended and unintended consequences of Michigan's multicultural reforms, this chapter focuses on the standard objectives of workplace diversity management: cultural change in order to retain and promote more women and minorities in response to the nation's changing demographics. There are cultures and subcultures throughout Michigan's premiere multiversity. The Michigan Mandate was an affirmative action-diversity policy document crafted by white elites responding to real or perceived crises in legitimation and societal stability. Within the web of research centers and professional schools, Michigan has tried to preserve a reputation for high-quality undergraduate education. The Michigan Mandate had its origins in escalating public relations crises. Race, ethnicity, and gender became much more potent factors in admissions, hiring, and promotions after race relations crises on campus in the mid-to-late 1980s.
