ABSTRACT

The social policy machine that sought to transform the "white male workplace" to accommodate increasing numbers of culturally different women and minorities is itself being reshaped by rapid cultural, political, and economic changes. While diversity practices have been tempered by time and changing realities, their ideology continues to mold and stimulate sociological and cultural forces in the workplace and beyond. The crucial new arena in the drive to transform Western values is the allegedly monocultural "white male workplace." Within the changing workplaces, diversity management policies will be further winnowed and tested in shifting job and consumer markets. Workforce changes and regulatory machinery have their own dynamics, and government commissions are famous for making recommendations that receive attention and little action. Diversity management theory became enshrined at the Washington Post via an internal study of its newsroom culture, prompted by low retention and promotion rates of women and minorities.
