ABSTRACT
THE first description of a Dani dialect was the annotated word list of Pesegem Southern Dani, published by van Nouhuys (1912). This is a remarkable tour de force by an untrained but observant explorer on the basis of a few days' study of the people. This was supplemented by Snell's word list for the same group (1913).
