ABSTRACT

Jews are not the only people who make jokes about Jews. There are numerous jokes non-Jews make about Jews and other ethnic minorities as well, just as Jews make jokes about members of other ethnic minorities or retell jokes that others have made. The jokes made about Jews by foreigners are for the most part brutal comic stories in which a joke is made unnecessary by the fact that Jews are regarded by foreigners as comic figures. In these jokes, various ethnic, social, political, religious, and other groups are ridiculed about the way they screw in light bulbs. Jokes about ethnic groups being stupid are, as Christie Davies points out, very common. Riddles rely on the general absurdity of their answers and techniques such as exaggeration, facetiousness, and insult, along with stereotyping, to create their effects.
