ABSTRACT

Many tourists travel to satisfy their curiosity about some country that has attracted their attention. For many people, India represents a curious combination of a country with modern high technology in some sections of the country and with ancient lifestyles in others. Rajasthan and India in general promises tourists "extreme" experiences—which is very alluring to certain kinds of tourists in search of adventure and an escape from the routines of first world tourism. Many tourists seek the exotic as a counter to their everyday life experiences and thus India's exotic nature is a powerful draw for them. The campaign of the Indian tourism industry, "Incredible !ndia," plays into this matter of a desire for the exotic in many tourists—a desire to do something different from visiting France or Italy or other countries which aren't that much different from one's own country.
