ABSTRACT

The greatest influence on the architecture of Los Angeles from 1980s to the present was the birth of Lucas films, where invention ruled. Its Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises raised the bar for new standards in filmmaking fantasy. Eric Owen Moss was born in 1943 and received a bachelor's degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. Moss's Gateway Art Tower is an entry tower of twisted forms that preceded the twisted high-rise towers that are currently being developed. Frank Gehry was born in 1929 in Toronto, Canada, but eventually moved to Los Angeles, California. Some of his best-known works are overseas, and they include the Fred and Ginger Building in Prague, so named because the building resembles two dancers, and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. Both Gehry and Moss studied at Harvard before starting their practices. Unlike Peter Bohlin's, Moss's work is far from quiet, though in the true American Spirit it is entirely empiricist and innovative.
