ABSTRACT

Pasadena one of Los Angeles's outlying cities, what followed was a windfall. The railroads cleverly and profit-ably discovered that they could expand ridership by establishing "destinations" for tourism. Frank Lloyd Wright emerged with a new attitude about architecture, in California two brothers began practicing architecture in Pasadena. They were Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene, and while their lifespans coincided with Wright's, they did their most significant work in the early 1900s. The most splendid example of their work is the Gamble House in Pasadena, California, which they designed for David and Mary Gamble, of the Procter and Gamble Company. Interiors at this level of excellence have never again been achieved in America. In the Gamble house there is a strong Japanese influence, particularly in the west terrace with its garden lantern and in the lily pond.
