ABSTRACT

People in leisure believe they are doing something they are not pushed to do, something they are not disagreeably obliged to do. In this definition, emphasis is ipso facto on the acting individual and the play of human agency. For leisure is typically conceived of as a positive mind set, composed of, among other sentiments, pleasant expectations and recollections of activities and situations. Neophytes in the serious leisure activities lack the acquisitions, though it is unquestionably their intention to acquire them to a level where they will feel fulfilled. The positive sociological concept of activity knows its greatest currency in the interdisciplinary fields of leisure studies and physical education and, more recently, kinesiology. People participating in leisure activities have as one main goal the desire for a satisfying or a fulfilling experience. Furthermore, they evaluate their involvement in these activities as good or bad, according to the level of satisfaction or fulfillment found there.
