ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the results of several tests of the hypothesis that diversity harms the employment opportunities of black Americans through regression analyses of industry level data from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commissions' survey of employers. It describes the reader at the outset that nothing reported here makes any claims about whether white women and minorities on the whole are discriminated against. The chapter examines the primary question is whether an increase in the percentage of other minorities and women in an industry's workforce has a negative impact on the percentage of African American employees. It also examines this question for three employment categories: all occupations, i.e. the total workforce; professional employees; and those employees classified as officials and man-agers. The forces that are driving the movement toward employment policies espousing the concept of diversity are primarily economic.
