ABSTRACT

Thirty-two years after the seizure of State power in Cuba by Fidel Castro and his July 26th Movement, the same regime reigns. Tyrannies and their tyrants throughout the former communist empire have toppled at amazing rates. Even those regnant Stalinist regimes that survived the wave of popular rebellion that overthrew communism in Eastern Europe, and liberalized the Soviet regime at the heart of the empire have undergone substantial changes. Fanaticism and fanatics have always been the source of good biography; and Fidel Castro is no exception. Characteristic of great dictators is their desire to control not only present worlds but future interpretations of their roles. Authorized biographies of Stalin reached the point where, in fact, no one could be entrusted with this task — so that biography became autobiography. Still living in Cuba, Luque also appreciates the gap between the process of revolution and the structure of a society.
