ABSTRACT

The concept of well-adjusted behavior translated in conformity might capture one's ability to master various relatively stressing events within the framework of societal rules and regulations. The degree of experiencing distress or not is an open question. The problem of acting "properly" in the society becomes confusing if not frustrating when the individual has to deal with a variety of new controversial and contradicting social beliefs-values, most of them created by ambiguous official policies that quite often lack a reasonable justification as general norms of conduct and seem to be of questionable moral validity. The new social and political climate has directly and indirectly encouraged a moral ambiguity that has basically ignored or defied adherence to truth or to the moral values. Under the umbrella of the moral relativism it would be easy for anyone pretending to act within the realm of conformity to attempt to benefit from the breakdown of societal ethical standards of conduct.
