ABSTRACT

The global consensus is that the natural family is the fundamental unit of society. This chapter analyses the story of the individual contrasts with the story of the family. A society built upon the foundation of atomized individualism will never be able to sustain the weight of human experience. Relative to individuals, the church can motivate persons toward sacrifice, through the subordination of selfish interests to a common creed. With an ultimate grounding in faith rather than in reason, the church can show a special authority and mobilize its followers toward effective action. Concerning morality, the church is ideally suited to bring out the good in all people. Like the story of the church, the story of the corporation can be framed by the walls it occupies. The story of the corporation is much too narrow to drive a healthy society. Only the natural family can do that. The state becomes the fundamental unit of society.
