ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book gives a brief history of the Nazi movement, with emphasis upon those aspects which are treated most extensively in the life histories. It attempts to ascertain the factors that have influenced the growth of the movement and evaluates their relative significance. The book helps the reader to judge for themselves whether or not the histories show any evidence of intentional fabrication. The clearer the meaning of Hitler's control over Germany becomes, the more one is inclined to turn back the pages of history and ask why Hitler came into power in the first place. The spectacular rise of the movement lead by him remains a puzzle. Special attention should be given to accounts of family life, education, economic conditions, membership in associations, participation in the Hitler movement, and important experiences, thoughts, and feelings about events and ideas of the post-war period.
