ABSTRACT

Anthropologists and archeologists were often high-handed and insensitive to the deepest feelings of native peoples: They dug up and looted new or graves, and bought, sold, traded, and exhibited bones and funerary objects without regard for tribal sentiments and customs. Dr. James Ridingin of Arizona State University calls hunting for bones, skulls, and artifacts, and displaying them, “extremely disrespectful,” and Armand Minthorn terms digging up and studying Native American remains “desecration of the body and a violation of our most deeply-held religious beliefs.” In fairness, it must be said that the proponents of Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act were seeking to right old wrongs. The citizens against government waste (CAGW) attack were actually the latest and most worrisome stratagem of a powerful and adamant foe of all mental health research. Scientologists focus particular attention on medications which relieve the profound symptoms of psychosis and depression.
