ABSTRACT

The Judaic myth of creation portrays God as a sexual egalitarian, when, according to Genesis, he made both male and female in his own image. Most feminists are therefore hostile to research on sex differences, particularly any effort to link them to biological influences, on the grounds that it is prejudiced, sexist, and unscientific. Feminists opposing research they consider sexist have neither the kind of political influence that might persuade Congress to block federal funding nor the temperament to mount disruptive or riotous demonstrations. The male-biased structure of social science would be a good thing—if the feminists had a specific methodology to replace it, and evidence that their methodology would indeed enable researchers to come closer to the truth. Sigmund Freud, who was having so powerful an impact on the thinking of the intelligentsia, pronounced woman’s fate in three words: “Anatomy is destiny.”.
