ABSTRACT

The mass-production revolution is the culmination of a major change in the social order that has been going on since the Industrial Revolution began two hundred years ago. In the mass-production revolution the basic principles of industrialism have come to full maturity. The essence of mass production lies in two new concepts: "specialization" and "integration". Mass production is actually a considerably more skilled system of production than any previous one. Much more new skill is required for integration than has been eliminated by specialization. The integration on which the mass-production order depends for its cohesion and productivity demands very high, an almost unprecedentedly high, degree of imaginative and intellectual ability. It demands a degree of understanding and support on the part of the individual member of the organization that goes far beyond anything traditional society requires. Citizenship is much more important in the mass-production order.
