ABSTRACT

cardinal suenens is a strong, direct, businesslike man. His influence at the Council seemed, for a time, second only to that of the Pope; so much so that there were those, in the early stages of the session at least, who were calling the Council "The First Council of Ma-lines." On one occasion, when the Pope was visiting a church in Rome, Cardinal Suenens was seen taking the Pope by the arm, moving him here and there, introducing him; the Cardinal is the type of man who controls the situation in which he finds himself. His voice is emphatic and clear. His ideas are forcefully presented. He seems, par excellence, the type of the modern bishop: learned, active, capable, profound.
