ABSTRACT

In the preceding pages I have, whenever possible, avoided using the unqualified term 'city' 1in connection with the ceremonial complex, and have endeavored either to furnish it with some such epithet as 'ceremonial' or 'cult' or to find a less specific expression. However, the question inevitably arises as to whether this settlement form can legitimately be classed as urban. This in turn requires that we attempt a definition ofurbanism.
