ABSTRACT

The champions of ambiguity had won their day and imposed their blurry agenda, much to the mixed feeling of the belligerent parties, who continue to haggle about its interpretation, close to half a century after its adoption in November 1967. But the issues at stake are not only legal, but also historical, moral, and security-related. Due to the continued hostility to Israel on the part of most Arabs, even the most "moderate" among them, it would be foolish for Israel to relinquish territories from which its eight-mile waist line can be harassed and terrorized. The "Territories" have in effect won worldwide recognition as "Palestinian", though they had never been under Palestinian rule before they were taken over by Israel in a defensive war par excellence, and part of them was handed over to the Palestinian Authority in a move that proved naïve and disastrous.
