ABSTRACT
Politically, New York is a "swing" state. In presidential elections during the past half-century, the state has given its electoral votes to the Demo crats six times and to the Republicans seven. Over the same period, the governorship has been won by Democrats in twelve elections and by Re publicans in seven. Democrats have won eleven elections for U.S. Senate seats; Republicans have won seven.
