ABSTRACT

Four New Jersey daily newspapers tower over the others in the state in readership and in the quality of their news products. The Star-Ledger, the Record of Hackensack, the Asbury Park Press, and the Camden Courier-Post are the biggest newspapers in New Jersey and the best. Although all but the Ledger are small fish compared to the major newspapers of New York City and Philadelphia, they are the big fish of the state of New Jersey. All four cover vast regions consisting of dozens of municipalities, and thus, like almost all New Jersey newspapers, they are essentially suburban rather than metropolitan dailies. Two of the four are owned by large newspaper chains. The Ledger is one of 27 Newhouse daily newspapers with a 1983 combined circulation of 3.2million. The owners of the Record and the Asbury Park Press, have other properties as well, but unlike Newhouse and Gannett, their primary business is New Jersey newspapers.
