ABSTRACT

Since the family is the primary and almost universal locus for the upbringing of the young, there is naturally a large amount of literature dealing with its role in that respect. As the young are growing up, in the diversity of relationships and conflicting demands, the family scene is not unlikely to be a somewhat troubled one. This is the time when differences in early training and inculcated discipline bear their respective fruits. Next in importance to what the family does for or to the young is what the school does for or to them. Critical schooling situations may occur at any stage from the nursery school to the end of schooling. Delinquency, according to one viewpoint, is as much a matter of intimate association with a group engaged in this behavior as is the spirit of neighborly service engendered in a well-knit group of Boy Scouts.
