ABSTRACT

To be invited to review a field in which Sir Ernest Rock Carling ‘had been particularly interested’is to be given virtually a free hand. His interests and enthusiasms ranged widely over the whole of surgery and medicine and it is typical of him that, a surgeon, he should have been so interested in new developments in medicine that in 1946 he became the second Chairman of the Committee of the Institute of Social Medicine in Oxford.
