ABSTRACT

In contrast to the book publishing industry, the number of domestic Chinese periodicals publishing with a national distribution has remained in the range of about 7,000 titles. China Youth Press publishes 700 titles annually under five different imprints, and of this total about 60 percent are new titles. The publishers who represented the strongest buying and selling of rights are based in Beijing, Shanghai, Liaoning, Jiangsu, and Guangxi. Mainland China is a developing country in terms of economic development. The list price for a single title has increased 17 percent compared with fifteen years ago. In the foreseeable future two kinds of books will become popular in China as its economy continues to grow, per capita income increases steadily, and its long traditions focus on education. China entered the "Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works" and "Universal Copyright Convention" in 1992.
