ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines the use of communication mediation in commercial settings. It describes how mobile communication increases our potential for autonomous action, but more importantly strengthens social relationships. The book provides with personalized insight into the way that mobile communication has changed the situation for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). It utilizes location-based material along with interview data to better understand the interaction between location and communication. The book also describes the domestication of the mobile communication technology not only for the individual, but also for those who are able to borrow it. It shows that the individuals use mobile communication to facilitate various issues associated with daily life. The book also examines how mobile communication can affect the intensity of a moment for both those who are co-present and those who are in virtual attendance via a mobile link.
