ABSTRACT

Yemen's geographical location along the coast of the Red Sea and its proximity to the Indian Ocean, as well as its control of the Bab el-Mandeb Straits, grants this desert-like country geo-strategic importance. In the 1970s, friction arose between North Yemen and South Yemen. The two main Islamic terror organizations active in Yemen are the Yemenite Islamic Jihad, which is the more veteran of the two, and a relatively new organization, which was established by a group that split away from the Islamic Jihad, namely the Islamic Army of Aden-Abyan. Members of the British terror network arrived in Yemen in early December 1998, and the network was activated in order to perpetrate terror attacks in Yemen. In addition to al Hariti four other Al Qaida activists were killed in the American attack: Salah Abu-Hama, al Kaija, Abu-Jarah Munir and Ahmed Hijazi, also called Jallal, who may have been a US citizen.
