ABSTRACT

This chapter presents results from a survey of "cult cops"—officers who have specifically concerned themselves with the satanism-crime connection. It describes who cult cops are and how they perceive links between satanism and crime. The chapter also presents an exploratory study examining the perceptions of a national sample of "cult cops," to shed light on these and related questions. It also describes views of a sample of officers active on the murky boundary that lies not just between crime and noncrime, but between good and evil. Conducting a survey of law enforcement personnel about their perceptions of the satanism-crime link proved extremely difficult. The chapter reviews an extensive literature on cult crime, satan-ism, and sociology of police and collective behavior. It examines the "trigger" or impetus for respondents' interest in satanism, then explores the extent of their involvement in the network of cult cops inside and beyond their agencies.
