ABSTRACT

Fly' is a generic name for a multitude of winged insects. It includes butterflies, fireflies, gadflies, horseflies, houseflies, mayflies, and innumerable other flies. To the author of this chapter's admiring eyes fly was a born acrobat, and he was his 'fit audience though but few'. He would also walk up and down the walls with the same disconcerting air of unconcern. Only, when it came to the windows, it was his turn to be disconcerted. Instead of calmly walking up and down the window-panes, or trying to skate on them as on ice, he would lose his nerve, no doubt at the sight of the garden outside, and proceed to buzz frantically up and down. He seemed to be desperately anxious to get out into the freedom of the garden and the wide open spaces.
