ABSTRACT

America is known for its freedom of the press, but A. J. Liebling, the great critic of the New Yorker magazine, once said that the only way to have freedom of the press is to own one. The country moved further to the right, the press responded, and the cycle keeps moving. George Washington University just a couple of weeks ago issued a survey of the three television networks and the way in which they cover politics. The George Washington University survey described the contents of the evening news. It usually starts off with about ten minutes of what has happened to the big people, the candidates, because of a philosophy in the media that the office holders make the news. The president makes the news. The president having a cold or a little sniffle is a lot more significant than some kind of labor union winning some kind of contract or some kind of movement agitating someplace.
