ABSTRACT

In the north-eastern United States, off the main highways and in the heart of some beautiful scenery, there are six settlements, the exterior view of which is particularly attractive. The settlements had their beginnings in 1920 in Germany, and have since undergone numerous changes, which have internationalized their population. Conversation with the members of the settlement quickly reveals that they belong to a Christian pacifist commune whose members live according to the precepts of Anabaptism and who practice communal living in the spirit of ancient Christianity. The more the author learned about modern communes, and as his knowledge of the Bruderhof widened, he realized that their communes were unique in the world of contemporary communal living. The author perceived theirs as the most deeply rooted vision of a communal movement and a shining example of a stable and evolving communal life.
