ABSTRACT

One approach, called Strategic Technology Analysis (STA), seems to have advanced a little further than most others. It focuses on the intrinsic characteristics of technologies. Based on these characteristics, the field offers a set of frameworks for analyzing individual technological entities as well as entire technological landscapes. These frameworks cover the anatomy, taxonomy, evolution, and ecology of technology. This chapter focuses on the development of the frameworks. It recommends that the frameworks be scrutinized anew and evaluated as part of a revitalized search for fundamental structure. While the issues of environmental criteria are being debated, the framework for analyzing the ecology of technology does offer a view of technology in relation to other systems. Strategic Technology Analysis offers frameworks that provide structure to technology analysis. These frameworks help to analyze individual technological entities as well as entire technological landscapes.
